Martin Margiela breaks the silence. The Belgian designer is the star of Reiner Holzemer’s documentary Martin Margiela: In His Own Words, which premiered last 8th November. Eleven years after leaving the fashion industry, the designer comes back to confess all those things he never told the press.
In spite of Margiela being the protagonist of the documentary, his face is never completely visible in any of the scenes. This was one of the designer’s requisites to star in the film and the reason why the story is told through his voice and there are plenty of detail shots of his hands.
The documentary portrays Margiela through his 20-year fashion career, during which he managed to keep his private life away from the public eye. “I don’t like the idea of being a celebrity. Anonymity is very important to me, and it balances me that I am like everybody else. I always wanted to have my name linked to the product created, not to the face I have”. With these words begins the film of his life.
